The Perfect 3-Day Michigan Road Trip Loop (Summer 2025 Edition)

If you’ve been dreaming about a summer road trip filled with lake views, small-town charm, and just the right amount of adventure, Michigan is calling your name. Whether you’re starting from Traverse City, Detroit, or even Chicago, this Great Lakes state has a perfect loop for your long weekend. We’ve put together three different 3-day Michigan road trip itineraries—each packed with scenic drives, cool towns, and plenty of photo-worthy stops.

Northern Michigan Loop: Start from Traverse City

Already in northern Michigan or planning to fly in? This route is classic Michigan at its best—perfect for slow mornings, hikes with a view, and lazy afternoons by the water.

Day 1: Traverse City to Sleeping Bear Dunes to Glen Arbor

Kick things off in Traverse City with a local coffee or a laid-back brunch. If you’ve never tried cherry pastries here, you’re in for a treat. Then hit the road west to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore—and yes, the dune climb is as wild (and fun) as it looks.

Cruise the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, hike a trail or two, and make your way into Glen Arbor for dinner. It’s the kind of place where the sunset over Lake Michigan feels like it was made just for you.

Day 2: Glen Arbor to Leland to Petoskey to Tunnel of Trees to Cross Village

Start your morning with a short drive up to Leland, home of the historic Fishtown district—an old fishing village turned charming boardwalk of shops and smokehouses. From there, continue north along the Lake Michigan shoreline to Petoskey, where you can hunt for Petoskey stones and grab lunch with a view.

In the afternoon, take the scenic drive along M-119, known as the Tunnel of Trees. This stretch between Petoskey and Cross Village is one of the most beautiful roads in the Midwest. End the day in Cross Village with a hearty Polish dinner at Legs Inn and enjoy a quiet evening in the woods or by the lake.

Day 3: Cross Village to Mackinaw City to Mackinac Island and Back to Traverse City

On your last day, head north from Cross Village to Mackinaw City—it’s a short and scenic drive. Hop on the ferry to Mackinac Island, where no cars are allowed and time seems to slow down. Rent a bike, explore the island loop, visit Fort Mackinac, or relax with some legendary fudge.

After a few hours on the island, ferry back to the mainland and begin your drive back toward Traverse City, stopping in Charlevoix or Torch Lake along the way if you’re in no rush to end the trip.
